Super Bowl Host Cities
Hosting the Super Bowl is an honor for any city. The majority of Super Bowls have been held in the south to guarantee favorable weather for what is one of the biggest sporting occasions of the year.
Up until Super Bowl LVI, teams were able to bid for the right to host the Super Bowl. The process has changed since then, however. NFL team owners now meet to decide the Super Bowl venue – this usually takes place several years prior to the game.
For instance, at the time of writing (January 2021), New Orleans has already been agreed as the host for the Super Bowl in 2025.
There’s a long list of requirements for a stadium to host a Super Bowl, including nearby hotel rooms, space for Gameday Experience and a minimum of 70,000 seats.
5 Cities that have hosted the most Super Bowls
Here are the five cities/regions to have hosted the most Super Bowls.
Phoenix – 3
San Diego, Houston and Atlanta have also hosted the Big Game on three occasions, but Phoenix takes fifth spot on this list as the city is due to host the Super Bowl for a fourth time in 2023.

The most recent Super Bowl in Phoenix was back in 2015. The Patriots staged an ,extraordinary Super Bowl comeback with Tom Brady driving down the field for a pair of touchdowns. Russell Wilson almost answered back but was picked off by Malcolm Butler. Butler’s interception is one of the most famous plays in Super Bowl history.
Tampa – 4
Raymond James Stadium hosts the 2021 Super Bowl. It is the first time in NFL history that a team will play in the Super Bowl at their own stadium – Tom Brady faces Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs as he aims for his seventh ring.

Tampa and Raymond James Stadium’s last Super Bowl was in 2009. Prior to that, it was the Ravens’ win in 2001. Both games ended with the rare outcome of non-quarterback Super Bowl MVPs.
Los Angeles – 7
It was common for the Super Bowl to be played in Los Angeles between the 1970s and 1990s. Los Angeles is on a Super Bowl drought of sorts, having not hosted the Big Game since 1993. That’s set to come to an end in 2022, however, with the Rams’ brand new SoFi stadium due to welcome the Super Bowl fanfare.

The Rose Bowl in Pasadena was frequently used for the Super Bowl in the past. Five times between 1977 and 1993, the Big Game was played at the iconic stadium, making it the joint-third most-used arena in Super Bowl history.

Super Bowl XXXVI is the most memorable of New Orleans’ Super Bowls. The game itself was good, but it is what it stands for in the annals of history. This was the first of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick’s Super Bowls – it was the start of the NFL’s greatest dynasty.
Miami – 11
It’s been a long wait for Super Bowl success in Miami, but they have held the Super Bowl three times in 13 years, including the Kansas City Chiefs win over the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.
